How to Attract Vendors to Your Market (and Keep Them)

Empty stalls kill a market. Here is how to attract good vendors, make booking easy, and keep them coming back.

An empty stall is worse than no stall. It makes your market look like it is dying, and it makes the vendors who did show up nervous. Filling your market is the single most important job you have. Here is how to do it.

Make booking stupidly easy

Vendors are small business owners juggling a hundred things. If applying to your market means emailing back and forth, filling in a PDF, and bank-transferring a deposit, a chunk of them simply will not bother. The markets that fill fastest are the ones where a vendor can see what is available, book, and pay in under a minute. Friction is the enemy.

Go where the vendors already are

  • Local Facebook groups for makers, crafters and small businesses
  • Other markets (politely talk to stallholders you rate)
  • Instagram hashtags for your niche and town
  • Word of mouth from vendors you already have

Sell the outcome, not the stall

Vendors do not want a 3x3 patch of concrete. They want sales, exposure and a good day. When you pitch your market, talk about foot traffic, the crowd, the vibe, and how you promote it. Show them they will make their stall fee back and then some.

Balance your categories

Five candle sellers next to each other is bad for all five. A good market has variety: food, makers, plants, vintage, something for everyone. Keep an eye on what you are accepting so no single category floods the day. Your shoppers (and your vendors) will thank you.

Keep the good ones coming back

It is far cheaper to keep a great vendor than to find a new one. Confirm their booking quickly, tell them their setup time and spot, and follow up after the market. A vendor who feels looked after rebooks without you having to chase. A vendor left wondering whether they even have a spot does not.
